28 Weeks Later

Post by Mike »

This is the sequel to the very very good 28 Day's Later. The premise is simple, 6 months have passed since the initial infection pretty much wiped out the UK population. The Americans have lead a NATO task force into London in an attempt to repopulate the UK and solve the mystery of the virus. Obviously a huge task as the population has fallen from 60 million to 30 thousand.

This film obviously been 'Hollywood'ified. The budget must have been massively greater than the original and had turned from a character based thriller (ie driving around abandoned motorways in a taxi) to what can only be described as quality special effects. I don't want to spoil any of the plot (though it can probably be guessed rather easily) but there are some scenes over London which are exceptionally brilliant.

The only criticisms are the budget made this film more action with a thinner plot compared with the original. A must see at the cinema on the big screen. I don't think the director was the same as the original 28 Days Later but they tried to keep the style very similar. This failed a bit as it was too mad to understand what was going on. In fact it made me feel very, very ill and I had to close and shield my eyes to avoid vomiting in the theater.

All in all 3S
Watch in the cinema as it will lose some of its qualities on the small screen.

PS I checked on IMDB regarding the director and was right.

Danny Boyle was the director of 28 Days Later (also did Trainspotting / A life Less Ordinary and The Beach). This story was written by Alex Garland who I believe also wrote The Beach!

Juan Carlos Fresnadillo is the director of the new 28 Weeks Later. The new story was written by Rowan Joffe and Juan Carlos Fresnadillo.
