Memoirs of a Geisha

Post by Mike »

This is a film about a bought child and her rise to become one of Koyoto's most famous and celebrated Geisha. The film focuses on her rivalry with another Geisha and really portrays her as a 'newbie' in the scene being lead and guided by an older and wiser woman.

Eventually it all turns sour when WW2 starts and quickly raps up after what appears to be the occupation of Japan. . . . . .

All in all a rather poor film and I would say a 2S worth of interest.

The film wouldn't be that dull if that's what I did all day, and my job might pay a bit better as well.

Worryingly, I bought Memoirs... for my sister for Christmas, but at least it was at her request.

Did she ever tell you what she thought of the film?

Hmm, don't think she did. Then again, I sort of assume requesting it on DVD implies that she quite likes it. I shall consult her soon(ish).

I suspect my sister likes this because it is a very, very pretty film. The sets and costumes are superb, but it lacks...well, passion. It's not like the plot itself is totally bad, it's just missing that engagement with the viewer it needs. I may yet get the book, though.
