Must be, heard the Coca-Cola advert on the radio twice this morning!

Not sure about the tag-line, 'Live life on the Coke side'. Surely we should be discouraging people from dabbling in Class A drugs?

The original formulation of coca Cola did contain some cocaine I understand.

Queen Victoria bought hers from Harrods (or whatever the equivalent was then).

Apparently so. According to Wikipedia (Article here), it was named Coca-Cola because the stimulant mixed in the beverage was coca leaves from South America, which the drug cocaine is derived from.

Well they were a decadent type of person in the Victorian era. Not like us lovely puritans here in the 21st century. :D

I've heard of people drinking a bottle of coke back in the 60s and downing a couple of paracetamol with it. it garnered some narcotic effect apparently?! but then they stopped having the actual coke in it!

There was a test done not too long ago where they tried to gauge how drunk people got off different alcoholic beverages. Apparently the person most 'drunk' was the one on the tester 'alcohol free' larger. I wonder if the coke paracetamol mix was a similar psychological con? Obviously without a 1960's bottle of coke and a couple of 1960' paracetamol we will never know. . . . (don't try this at home kids!)

That reminds me of a funny story regarding a certain Mr Twentyman. It was the day of his 22nd birthday and he refused to come out even though we pestered him like mad for ages. He said he had a big presentation to do. Anyway, he finally bowed to pressure and came out but drank only coke. One of us went to the bar and got him 3 birthday shots - extra large blackcurrant, apple juice and orange juice. What the person - Ste Philips - did was to ring the top of the glass with a shot. The upshot was that Twentyman spewed, sprawled around for ages and suddenly, half way through dancing like a complete prat, walked out in a perfectly straight line.

The "drunk" alcohol-free tester also reminds me of an article about a somewhat unusual course where people could get tuition in how to "think themselves drunk". Mind over matter, baby! I would say it would make for a cheaper night out, but Coke is still fairly expensive in pubs.

It's all in the mind. I have seen people get "drunk" just on Lemonade.

Starnge indeed, but quite true.
