Re: Student Fees

Finally the student population is effected by the increasing student fee's. I like the irony is they are training more people from poorer backgrounds to be able to go to university then making university the reserve of the rich (or the willing to get into massive amounts of debt).

Thank god for that!
This is one of my pet peeves- higher education for all! GRRR... I'm all for free admittance for the cream of the crop if their parents can't afford it and don't believe that social status should determine where your education stops, however... If you are not bright enough to go to university on your own merit I REALLY don't think its right that the government should subsidise you to go just because you think you'd like to avoid the real world for a few more years! By the same token I don't believe being rich should be an instant ticket to uni either- It should all be by grades (or experience- if you've proven you can work in the real world then great). Being Scottish meant that I got into uni with no fees- so the issue never arose, some of my mates were on means tested loans etc, but without fees these could be spent on food etc. So the strain was lessened on them.

Working for MMU (which prides itself on admittance for all) I'm driven crazy by dealing with thick students who have NO interest in Ecology- they just want a degree and seem to believe that if they cant be bothered studying that we'll pull em thru. Because the uni is getting soo much money from em the admin dept. are reluctant to fail anyone!

rant over, for now... I think I'll be coming back to this one!

The problem is that in some social groups it's pretty much expected that people will go to university, hence a certain amount of people going "for the experience", "because all my friends did", or even "because my parents would disown me if I didn't".

Well they will not be able to just go 'for the experience' any more (unless they are wealthy) and will have to study hard to make it worth the money they are paying for it. I think I worked out that it would take about 80 years to pay off my student debt. That is only debt from the student loans company too - I did not have any further ones like overdrafts etc.
