Dexter Series Two - Spoilers

Post by Mike »

This post carries on from Dexter Series One and contains spoilers from Series One and Two so stop reading now if you want the viewing to be a surprise!

At the end of series one Dexter's step sister had been kidnapped by the Ice Truck killer who revealed himself as Dexter's real brother and wanted him to join in the fun in Killing his step sister. Dexter came to Deb's aid and ended up fighting and eventually killing his brother. He also managed to get his girlfriend Rita's ex husband Paul locked up for 'violating his parole' by shooting him full of drugs and leaving him unconscious at his motel.

At the start of Series Two Dexter is feeling that he has cleanly wrapped up his loose ends, however, there are several problems.

1. At the end of Series One pleasure divers found where he was dumping his bodies of the criminals killed! Eeek, being dubbed the Bay Harbour Butcher and having the FBI breathing down his neck at work does not make his life pleasant (especially since his Sister Deb is on the task force!)
2. Rita found evidence that Dexter was involved in Paul's incarceration (which lead to him being beaten to death in prison) and mistakenly believed that he is a heroin addict (where else would he get the heroin from and know how to use it?!). Rita forces him to go to Narcotic's Anonymous and take therapy to help with his addiction. This has serious side effects on Dexter's mental health as he is forced to examine his past by a his NA sponsor which leads to him feeling angry and frustrated.
3. A colleague becomes suspicious about why he was able to find Deb and the Ice Truck killer so easily and why be did not tell the rest of the department. Doug starts tailing Dexter to find out his secret.
4. Dexter loses his form in the serial killing world after killing his brother and struggles to find his Zen.
5. He starts to realise that his step father Harry's code was not how the police man lived, Dexter begins to question his step fathers values and motives. . . .

Season Two is always difficult especially since this formula of a serial killer tracking down other murderer's who have escaped justice. In this case though they have totally refreshed the programme, the motivation of Dexter is frightening as it alters and sways, the FBI chasing him down leads him to making mistakes and nearly being caught. The characters have developed and are mostly lovable! In short and very very strong effort for keeping the magic of Series One going.

The full 5s is very much deserved and I can't wait till Sunday to get the next Dexter fix. I would recommend watching Series One first if you have not see it. The whole story would not really make as much sense or be as refreshing if you have not seen the background.
