A while ago I was complaining that my Virgin broadband would just die at regular intervals. The cure was to reboot the router and it would be flying again.
I've just downloaded the utility that updates the Virgin e-mail settings (they now work in conjunction with Google) and lo and behold, so far I have not had to reboot all day. Clearly whatever was changed in the e-mail settings has also changed something in IE8.
I really hope this proves to be a cure, because it was becoming very annoying, but I'll let you know. Hopefully it might help someone else if they have been experiencing trouble too.
