Re: Cool Houses
A cold war bunker is on the market in Derbyshire. For a mere £25k you can get a chemical toilet and some monitoring equipment. Excellent property to own for the eventual nuclear fall out.

Re: Cool Houses
Some friends of a friend picked something similar up: an ex-MoD bunker, possibly built slightly earlier. However, it was the same price but came with an acre of land and was about 1500-2000 sq.ft (up in Scotland somewhere). Then the asbestos cost about 40 grand to remove, so maybe not as good a bargain as it first seemed...

Re: Cool Houses
naf Architect Design have done this house. Interesting concept, I like the way it floats above the ground floor seemingly supported by the very fine columns.
Log Cabin. I like the fun of having thin sections of the logs cut and put on the end elevation to make it look like a stack of logs. The only let down is the very visible frame for the shutters.

Re: Cool Houses
I like the log cabin purely for how playful and fun it is, and the first house for the contrast between the middle super-open glazed area and the rest of the house. Although the bathroom with its huge windows freaks me out a bit.

Re: Cool Houses
Cherokee by Pugh and Scarpa an interesting apartment block in the US of A. It looks like very cheap materials have been used but it does not detract from the over-all good impression.

Ogaki House. This has some very beautiful textures and I like the way that it looks like a Childs drawing of a house. Excellent design.

Re: Cool Houses
I immediately thought "Venturi house" when I saw that. Not quite the same, but it was the giant gable effect that prompted it, I think.
The shape's a nice response to the environment (seasonal winds), not sure about the architects statement mentioning the louvred areas to allow sound to penetrate between floors. Especially with a house full of young girls.

Re: Cool Houses
Altar Alto did another house for his mother with a similar concept. It was called Brick House from memory.

Re: Cool Houses
Looking at all these modern houses makes me wonder if the extensive use of wood is not going to make them very high-maintenance? Once the paint/stain starts to wear off they might look rather scruffy as well?

Re: Cool Houses
House by Kuenzel Architects. An interesting design, very neatly proportioned and detailed. I was liking the internal stairs as well.

Re: Cool Houses
Certainly neat, almost too much for my tastes! The stairs would be scary if you were drunk (two flights to fall down instead of one).
