TV: Red Dwarf...but different.

Yes, apparently there was a Red Dwarf pilot episode made. USA style. I never knew this, but the whole thing is on Google video, so I thought I'd share. Apologies if anyone's seen it before.

it's also gone into in great detail on the extras disc for red dwarf series 5 . the whole think was a wash out and you can tell from the interviews with doug naylor that he's still pissed, and rob llewlyn [the only original british version dwarf in it] was bemused by the differences enforced by the studios. it stank big time - why the hell they couldn't just show the bbc shows is beyond me

The only other example that springs to mind is The Office. Maybe they get worried that Americans can't relate to British actors, but we seem to manage just fine with imported American TV...doesn't really help the "Americans are cultural isolationists" stereotype.

Red Dwarf is set to hit our screens again in Easter thanks to the Digital TV channel Dave. Nicely done but I worry it will have lost its edge after 10 years absense from our screens. It will also have the original cast . . . in full. I wonder if Christine Kochanski will return as well. . . . []

Dave commissions a set of six new Red Dwarf episodes. As it is nearly 12 years since it left the Beeb I wonder if it will managed to modernise so it does not disappoint!

I never even managed to watch those four episodes from 2009, will have to check them out sometime - should give a decent idea of how the even newer ones will turn out! I'm just a little worried they may scar the franchise... at least they got all the original cast.

The 2009 series felt like a group of middle aged men trying to be young and fresh. Not their best episodes it must be said. Must have been popular enough for Dave to want to re-create the event.
