Windows - why? Just why?

A friend recently had some major grief with his comp, has anyone got a solution?

For no apparent reason, when a program is run, windows would shut down and restart, cancelling the program of course. This occurs/occurred at least once a day, (not spoken to them since so I am unsure whether the problem has been sorted or not).

After consulting an IT technician, I wonder if anyone here can enlighten me on why windows would do this?

Also on a related topic - does Bill Gates deserve the credit and consequential wealth for windows? Is he morally obliged to make charitable donations due to his enormous wealth?

A virus is one likely explanation.

Yes, Bill Gates and Microsoft deserve every penny they earn - it would be very ungrateful of us not to recognise the phenomenal advantage of Windows platforms being recognised and useable by just about everybody in the world. Without this wonderful invention just imagine the chaos of competing formats....

There is no obligation to share one's wealth, but doing so is a good thing IMHO. There is a balance to be struck, because after all giving evrything away isn't such a good idea either.

A virus was my intial thoughts also, however I have been told otherwise. Competing formats you say? What about Mac?

It's the program, or resources the program requires. Do similar programs do it (ie. requiring 3d acceleration, sound, etc)? The first statement does cover a lot of stuff, though. Reinstall the program, then go from there, would be my humble opinion.

I believe Bill Gates does make some charitable donations, or at least runs some worthwhile educational programs. Anyone care to confirm that?

I don't have any more information, as I havn't witnessed this first hand, just something I've been told about. I was told it may be due to a file error or something like that, withiin windows itself. Thanks for the help though.

Bill Gates make more money than some countries, just like Ebay, (no lie).

We're supposed to live in a society that encourages initiative and seeks success, unless, of course, there is too much success and somebody does better than others think they should. Then they are hit with criticism, windfall taxes, etc., and there seems to be an attempt to limit that success.

This is mirrored in the rise and fall of organisations and countries and empires. At some point human nature puts on the brakes and a self-limiting effect occurs.

I agree with mr_e and john the only reason I can think of for a sudden shut down is the computer not having sufficient specification to run the program or a virus. Virus's tend to crash the program though, not just windows.

Bill Gates does make very generous donations, party due to morality but I think donations are also a tax write off in terms of income tax. . . . IE you are not taxed on your donations that come from your personal income.

Bill Gates should make a donation ..................................... to me! The sum of ten million pounds will grately be received. In turn, I will donate a suitable beverage to each of you to celebrate my good fortune! :D

Yes, Bill Gates does make charitable donations and I think he deserves every penny he makes. If we were him then we would want all the money.

Wow, its the trickle effect. Wealth being passed around like you would not believe, ?10million becomes ?100 worth of drinkies at the next level, I like it (and would do exactly the same thing!

?10 Million is supposedly pocket change to Mr Gates, good on him. I feel a little sorry for MS at the moment as every court in the world seems to be using it as a way to generate massive fines. I think it is moderately smalled minded of them as they do not fine apple for bundeling imail, iphoto, igarage etc with their operating system.

I agree with you. Apple is particularly bad, MS is victimised because it is successful and has money.

I would personally sue 'Apple' for their name. My stupid inane court case, as is the norm these days, could be that every time I hear it I am hungry. Surely, someone somewhere will do this before long. Apple? What were they thinking? Still, its better than 'Tangerine', Banana or 'Advocado'. But not much better.

That reminds me of a garfield cartoon I saw recently. The computer garfield was working on had a pear with a bite removed (like the apple logo but a pear) it was pure funny genius!
