War of the Worlds

Post by Mike »

Hiya all,

I recently went to see this film and was impressed. This film was nothing like the book but I think that it managed to pull itself into the modern day setting very successfully indeed. Naturally it was much more explosive and dramatic and americanised than the book and if you are looking for a true telling then you will be disapointed.

I think that this fillm was much more successful than say Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy which was very poor by comparison.

This film was entertaining if you ignore the huge gaps in the plot that open up during the film!
3S

PS Watch out for the wonderful bit of protective CGI where the scene immediately prevents you seeing the CGI bit. When you see it you will know what I am talking about.

I have seen a reasonable chunk of the start and found it entertaining. I would like to have heard less of the hysterical girl.

Generally i agree with Mike, the special effects are pretty cool the heat ray rocks. They almost managed an "oooooooh laaaaaaaa" when the first machine emerged but not quite.

Also if the machines were buried in the past as Mr Cruise suggested wtf did the matrians not just conquer the planet then? Why did they wait for use to colonise it first? Maybe they drunk irish aliens just spoiling for a fight.

We need a proper British one set in London now that would be cool. For me there can only be one war of the wordls (Jeff Wayne's) thanks to brainwashing by parents from a very early age

Much to lizzies annoyance I was humming that one all the way through the film, at the appropriate places obviously!

Sorry, but I have to agree with Mr Knight. Jeff Wayne's is the ultimate telling of the War of the Worlds story. Who needs visual effects when Richard Burton is telling you exactly what's going on and you use your imagination to see what it looks like.
