Raising Helen

Post by Mike »

This is a film about a young care free modeling agent who's life is turned up side down by the sudden death of her sister and becoming the legal guardian for her three children.

This is supposed to be a romantic comedy but I don't think it is either very romantic or very funny.

I thought it was touching, and enjoyed this film very much.

I hate films like this. I knew I would hate this film because Rowenna made me go and see it.

I would give it no stars.

I reiterate, I hate films like this.

HATE!

was it a chick flick or just one of those coming of age/discovering the caring parent figure inside films? why is it when someone gets lumbered with someone else's bastard offspring in movies that they always start off cold hearted and turn into mary poppins?

nope, the reason is so that boyfriends will get dragged there by their girlfriends and made to watch some chickshitflick and then have to spend the next hour listen to them talk about how great a role model that leading actress was for the modern woman and how great you were for going to see it with her which means that you get extra brownie points and she compliments you in front of her mates which means that you get positively recognised with a big style ''hello'' instead of a 'hhfhfh' (grunt) the next time you see her best friend.

either that... OR..... they decided to make another ''woman under increasing stress shows that she is a true heroine'' which when infered means that it is another ''women don't need men'' film.

Raising Helen was about a work aholic model agent who's sister dies. She then goes through a massive life change as her sister has left the children in her care. It is a very obvious story. Kids run riot, Helen loses job, audience supposed to feel sorry for Helen, Helen gets new job, new bloke, loses kids and finally gets them back again with an impassioned speech.

Very touching.

i hate the impassioned speeches that are supposed to turn kids round. I want the realistic stuff put back in films where the kids turn into chavs and say ''am i bovrd?'' back to the failing mothers.

I suppose the main great thing about film is that generous dollop of unreality mixed with every one. Its very evident in films like Wimbledon (englishman winning?!), Love Actually (PM Hard line speech not causing major diplomatic incident) et cetera.

I was kind of hoping it might be a zombie rom-com, with a girl called Helen being resurrected or something...
