Mike will understand the title. I came across a remarkable statement the other day, and I'll share it with you now:

"An uberwurf is similar to a pelican but has no bolster."

It's hard to deny a statement like that, but here's a challenge - who can tell me what it means?

No prize, only the kudos of being mega-knowledgable if you get it right!

If I could remember what a Pelican looked like, I might be able to take a guess. No big bit for storing fish? It's too late for me to be reading stuff that requires thinking...

A clue: this pelican would relieve you of pain, although whilst it was in use you would be in agony.

I think my brain's had enough for the evening, it's making hollow sounds. Surely it's not dentistry related, like some bizarre Dr. Seuss for dentists? I could always Google it, but that's no fun...

Mr_e has the right idea, it is indeed what he describes. dating from the early 1800s I think, the uberwurf is very similar to the oral surgery device called a pelican. Because of its shape. You might use this to remove teeth roots, and eventually the pain would be relieved, after much application of pre-operative whisky to help things along...The bolster is some sort of supportive stop to aid in this medical vandalism.

If they had only known what they were doing, then life would have been much better. Bring on the leeches...

Well done, Mr_e.

I'm glad you put us out of our misery, that would've bugged me for ages, although I wouldn't like to see anything pelican-shaped anywhere near my teeth. I like the thought of pre-operative whisky, but it does mean more bleeding in the messier extractions.
