Some Can and Some Can't

Post by johnriley1uk »

That is, some can and some can't view images posted on the ADAPS website and linked from ePHOTOzine in particular.

The odd thing is that some who couldn't found that they could after they had visited EPZ. Almost as if the link was allowed after cookies had been placed.

Any ideas from our computer experts?

The only thing I can think of is that the photograph was in the cache and the computer recognised it as the same image. I don't know of anything else unfortunately.

That could be so if it were my image and my PC, but it can't be that when others are viewing (or trying to) from elsewhere....

When you view a web page the computer puts the image (or part of it) into its temporary internet cache as I understand it anyway! So if viewing other peoples photos you will have part of their image saved on your computer.

I could be wrong and am willing to be corrected.

I can kinda see where you're going with this Mike. I suspect that the host ePHOTOzine dislikes people hotlinking to images on their site and has some sort of cookie checking to determine where they're coming from. If they don't have a cookie set then it assumes they are being hotlinked, so you may actually be seeing a non-cached version of the image.

The above could all be a complete load of old tosh though, as I've not even looked at ePHOTOzine's site.

In short, once you go to the site and view the image directly, it's stored in your browser's cache for quicker retrieval. When you try to view the image again, the browser looks in the cache first, finds it there, and displays it, without even trying to follow the direct link (the only thing it uses it for here is to find out which image it should check for in the cache). That's my understanding of what you describe, John.

Good answer Mr_e, but I suspect that people cannot originally see the images on the ADAPS site because of some cookie related shenanigans as well.

Yeah, I've just read the thread properly, and if access happens simply just by visiting EPZ and not necessarily the image itself (as I believe John is saying), it has to be either cookies, or some weird server-side stuff.

Although I have tried it just now with a couple of images from John's portfolio, and direct linking was no problem, with or without cookies: even with the entire cache and cookies deleted before the second viewing, they still displayed just fine.

Remind me to read technical threads in more detail before making myself look silly next time...
