I believe, melud, that this proves they are two separate programmes and need to be bought separately. May we have an independent adjudicator to decide the case!

Sorry Lizzie, but they are indeed two separate programmes (hope this doesn't affect my 70/30 status!). Often as not Office will come pre-installed on most reasonably expensive laptops/pcs, and will certainly be installed on any work pcs.
I downloaded Office 2007 using my MSDN subscription the other week, and therefore didn't have to pay a penny! :D

Basically 'tis a special licensing agreement that we have here. Stands for Microsoft Developer Network, there's a centralised place to download any Microsoft product you need (as long as your agreement covers it.)...I dread to think how much it costs for our licences, although we're a Microsoft Official Partner (not that you get any better product support...), so there's probably a hefty discount.

We have a cur down version of Office pre-installed as part of our packages, but it doesn't include a full version of Powerpoint or Excel. So Lizzie is right that Office is a part of the package, but not a full version.
The best value is the Student/Teacher license that covers up to three computers in the home.
We haven't bothered though because Pictures2Exe makes better presentations than Powerpoint and there is a free version of something very similar to Excel if needed.
Some computers definitely have it pre-installed, but most non-business ones won't. Except all the stuff on our HP network computer, which virtually crippled it right from the start (that and running XP on 256Mb of memory). I've gone open-source for my software: OpenOffice does what Microsoft Office does, and it's free.
I'm sure Windows would want Office pre-installed on every computer, but they'd be back in front of the European Courts again...
Pre-installed does not mean it is the same programme as windows. It just means you are paying for the licence wrapped up in the computer costs somewhere.
Do any PCs come with Office? - you need to know someone who's brother will lend you the CD! so i've heard...
My PC came with Microsoft Works; it caused me a bloody nightmare when i tried to email an assignment to a uni tutor and it wasn't a Word file! back in the day when i didn't know about file types...
Is it still true that if you get Windows pre-installed on a PC you can get rid of it and Microsoft will refund some money? I can't remember if that was a complete urban myth or not.
Filetypes can still be a complete bane, I imagine especially so with filetypes for different packages Mike will use, even saving in the right version type. Or has that all been done away with now?
Word files on macs can be used on pc's or at least if they don't people we send stuff too do not complain at all!
I have never heard of the Microsoft refund thing. I am not really sure they will do that!
Lets not get into the current confusion at work between those with Office 2007 and those with Office 2003. Us in the development department are basically guinea pigs for the company, so we get the new stuff first..but then have to remember that the rest of the company can't open any documents created unless they're saved as 2003 versions...joy!

Microsoft banned from selling Word due to patent infingement in the US. They have been fined £175m in addition to the ban and will have to appeal if they want to keep selling Word 2007. . . . Oh dear.
