Fairytale of New York

Post by Mike »

I thought it was amazingly stupid that BBC Radio 1 edited the Fairytale of New York based on the fact there Kirsty MacColl and Shame MacGowan traded insults like 'you cheap lousy faggot' in the lyrics. I was listening today and the station got a storm of derision from the listeners and DJ's and decided to play the unedited version. Thank you common sense!

Andy Parfitt did eventually say that the station 'trusted the common sense of their listeners to know the difference between creative freedom and unacceptable behaviour'. I would like to suggest that they do not trust the common sense of their listeners else they would not have instigated the edited version in the first place!

This is just the kind of PC behaviour that drives me round the bend. Good on the public. This song is one of my all time favourites and is an absolute classic. Love it!

I heard it on when I was on site yesterday at our new offices. The song really lacked something for its gripping! I think you are right, much better not to have the overly PC attitude to it all. They should all visit Cuba or somewhere similar to see what their attitudes are like - the two extreme's meeting and all that. ;-)

Agreed. A great song that will only be ruined by the removal of the insults. Whilst I don't like to sound all Daily Mail, this really is one of the worst examples of PC drivel and nanny-state behaviour that we've seen for ages.

peter tatchell of gay rights group outrage! has critised the beeb for putting the insults back in - it shows the corporation to be hypocritical and out of touch with modern society to allow the word faggot to be aired. peter: do yourself and your pals a favour and shut up for christ's sake, faggot is too good a word to be wasted on just queers, shirt-lifters and arse-bandits. [more offensive words to be added later as and when i can think of any :-0 ]

I always preferred the term used by a good dear friend of mine at Uni whose name was Andy Keogh (we called him Queeny for endearment). Anyway, amongst his many terms of insult for his sexuality, I always did have a giggle at ''shit shoveller'' and ''turd jockey''.

That bloke isn't worthy of any of these phrases. He is simply an arse who has nothing better to do with his time than complain. This is one example of a campaigner of ''human rights'' that I hate. In trying to defend the rights of homosexual men he has in fact probably alienated them more from mainstream society because he was probably the only one who could be arsed commenting and he has no doubt siad he is speaking up for gay men everywhere.

I hate this song, so I don't care. For me it's right down there with Build Me Up Buttercup and I would walk 10,000 miles. Cue outraged gasps. Claim to fame though, my headteacher gigged with the Pogues back in the day.

I could make a scathing comment about my friendship with Al being the foremost symptom of my lack of taste as a Yorkshire woman. But I won't. I will merely suggest that those of us who are true Northerners gang up against Al, who is a Midlander. Who's with me?

Oh, and while I remember Gordon, you can shove that comment where the sun don't shine cos we're top of the table, baby, yeah!!!

I have to say that The Foundations classic 'Build Me Up Buttercup' is completely naff but it does make most people do the ''walk to the disco'' dance as soon as it comes on because it is a great record to boogey to.

As background...my parents and I had just finishing our (pre-lunch) three mile walk at two in the afternoon when some friends of the family drove past. A five hour drinking session ensued (still pre-lunch). I am still quite drunk.

I was going to liken taking the piss out of Leeds' supporters to mocking the disabled, then I realised Leeds were top of the table...of losers. Eventually I remembered my Mum is from Yorkshire, and my Dad is from Northumbria, so I am with Claire in revolting against the Midlander scum. I feel somewhat torn...

I am far too drunk for half past seven.

Firstly Miss Lambert, I would like to remind you of the fact that my Dad is a Lancashire-man by birth and up-bringing. He only moved to the Midlands when he realised that it was a far superior place to be.

Secondly...top of which table? The Premiership? Oh no, that would be Manchester United (Pride of all Europe, Cock of the North etc, etc.)...so that must make you top of the Cilit Bang! (or whatever it is this week) Championship? Oh, no wait that'll be West Brom (boing! boing!).

So, where are you top of? Ah yes...League One...except that you're not now are you? ;-)
