Cuil or Not?

Post by Mike »

Cuil pronounced Cool (apparently) is a new internet search engine on the block and a self professed Google killer. The reviews have been pretty poor and at the moment and a couple of simple queries from me received mixed bag of results. For example rileyuk as a search reviewed Rob and Kirsty's website because it has a link to mine on it. I found that pretty odd!

Here is the BBC dot life article on the new engine. Has anyone tried using this one yet?

I guess that you have not bothered trying this one! It is being bashed again, this time for claiming that Cuil means knowledge in Irish. Unfortunately for them, the official keepers of the Irish language say that it is more commonly meaning Corner, Nook or Hazel (as in the nut). . . . On a side note, if there is one word that means three things that could make Irish a particularly difficult language to learn!

I've had a quick look, and while it looks nice (especially the results page), I'm not 100% sure about the quality of the returned results. I guess it's early days and they'll be tweaking their algorithms as more people use the site though. Don't really know why I would bother investing time, effort or money in another search engine though!

Especially as Google has an effective monopoly on the whole industry. After all you don't use to Yahoo! as a verb do you?!

Exactly! In fact, The Register frequently takes the mickey out of Yahoo!'s announcements by sticking! an! exclamation! mark! at! the! end! of! each! word! They don't seem to extract the urine with Google half as much.
