Penelope is a modern day fairytale about an heiress who is born under a curse that gives her a pig snout and ears until the day that a 'blue blood will accept her for who she is'. It is essentially a love story in a beauty and the beast style story. Penelope's mother understands the curse means that she will be released from her curse on the day of her wedding and pulls out all the stops to find a suitable aristocratic husband. Unfortunately many of the potential suitors throw themselves from a first floor window to escape.
Eventually Penelope escapes her controlling mother and has an adventure in New York City until she has a revelation about herself. Christina Ricci is the leading role and does well, there is a rather poor performance from Richard E. Grant as her father and James McAvoy as a potential suitor. Nick Frost makes a guest appearance as a gambling aristocrat who steadily gambles away his family fortune and does not say too much at all.
All in all not too bad but rather average performances. I would say it gives a performance.
