Re: Windows 7 Launches
The Register has some balenced and some very damning reviews about Windows 7. I will be interested to know if the log in process does crawl to a halt after a few weeks as reported. Al, JR1 please can you let me know if it's the case? Cheers.

Haven't upgraded yet...still need to remove the screw that's holding the plastic cover hiding the hard-drive (got a new one for a complete 'Clean Install'). Stupid thing won't shift...grr!Mike wrote:The Register has some balenced and some very damning reviews about Windows 7. Re: Windows 7 Launches
Think I may try to get a copy of XP installed if I buy a new computer in the next few months.
That said, I know one person who is using the release candidate (ie Ultimate Edition) of Windows 7, which seems fine. No screams of anguish from his room, anyway.

Re: Windows 7 Launches
XP is nearly 9 years old so I am getting to be of the opinion that it is time to try the new system. Eventually we will all have to let go!mr_e wrote:Think I may try to get a copy of XP installed if I buy a new computer in the next few months.
That said, I won't be replacing my Windows XP laptop with a Windows 7 laptop that is for sure.

Re: Windows 7 Launches
I think XP's going to be supported until 2014. It's fairly stable, and I have some software that I'm not sure will run on Windows 7 yet.
That said, I'll likely change my mind once there's more reliable feedback on Windows 7.
I had to laugh at the people in that Register article saying they'd installed old drivers on stuff then were wondering why it wasn't working properly though.

You can run Windows XP Mode within Windows 7 as a Virtual PC (apparently...stupid screw!). You have to be on Professional or Ultimate though.mr_e wrote:I think XP's going to be supported until 2014. It's fairly stable, and I have some software that I'm not sure will run on Windows 7 yet.

Re: Windows 7 Launches
Amazon are still selling Windows 7 family packs for those people with multiple computers in a single dwelling. It's recommended to have the same OS on all computers so grab em
whilst you can.

Re: Windows 7 Launches
Windows 7 Bug enables users to create a 'God Mode' in a single folder by creating a new folder and renaming it 'GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}'. This will enable the users to enact all changes to desktop, folder permissions, mouse pointer icons from a single folder. Cool or just plain dangerous?!

Re: Windows 7 Launches
Interesting. Looking through the comments on the article, this bug (feature?) has been around since Windows 95 and doesn't pose a security threat, for once. Seems to allow you to change all settings from one place. Nice.
My copy of XP blue-screened yesterday, so I may be coming closer to getting a Windows 7 PC. Or a new hard disk. Still unsure on the whole Mac thing.

Re: Windows 7 Launches
Either way it is nice to get a new computer. A new HD is nice but no where near as exciting. Lets be honest if you want to a mac you will pay more up front but the benefits more than compensate for the cost.mr_e wrote:My copy of XP blue-screened yesterday, so I may be coming closer to getting a Windows 7 PC.
