Windows Vista apparently started off very badly and got a very bad reputation very quickly. They have supposedly improved it massively in Windows 6.1 (ie Windows 7!).

Yeah, they've got rid of most of Vista and made it more like a proper OS!

Mine arrives on the 22nd...anyone coming round for a party?

Only if you promise to put the laptop in secure storage for the evening. We don't want to be infected like those 'people' in the youtube video. . . .

Windows Mobile 6.5 has been released this week and has been generally ignored with other mobile news (mainly iPhones on other networks, android improvements and Palm
Pre). The few articles on the subject have panned the 'improvements' without exception. One article made the point that since the 2007 Apple have released 3 iPhones, android has made leaps and bounds and Palm have built a brand new OS. Oh dear Microsoft, the woes are getting worse.

Promotional Family Guy episode for the launch of Windows 7. OMG will they stoop any lower. This has the potential to go very, very wrong.

Today is the launch day of Windows 7. The BBC have a very good article on how to update. They recommend using a clean install to get the best / pain free upgrade. This guide from Microsoft shows you the difference between each one. I have seen better comparisons on my RSS feeds but I can't remember where! (edit - Cnet comparison is better)

The upgrade from Vista to 7 will improve the performance of you computer. johnriley1uk, this might also be a cheaper option than buying a new computer. The cost on Amazon runs from £115 upwards to £160.

That seems expensive and I don't really know why there are so many programmes! My OS X update should be £129 for a full release and there is only one option - unless you are running a server that is!

Yeah I'll be doing a full install sometime over the next few days, just need to back a load of stuff up first. I've got an external hard-drive with all my iTunes and Photos on, so it'll just be a case of working out which applications I've currently got installed I actually use and need to re-load.

Windows 7 Review from the Guardian. Tag line - Like Vista but faster and less annoying.

Al - let us know how it goes.

First impressions...the box is very nice!

I spent last night trying to free up hard-drive space and doing a general clear-up before install (apparently Windows 7 will restore all my programmes and files automatically), which didn't go to plan. Far too slow and dull!

Will get rid of some more tonight and hopefully get it installed over the weekend.

Does the new laptop play The Sims 3?

Yes it does, even though we are now at the other extreme of it being too new for Sims3 to recognise the new NVIDIA graphics card (1GB RAM on card).......

The new laptop now outclasses all our other computers and is lightning fast. :-)
