iPhones Imminent

Mike's Parental Units are pleased to announce the imminent arrival of twins - his and hers iPhones are in transit and due to arrive Friday morning.

These sprog-substitute devices will be up and running by Friday evening if all goes according to plan! After that, if anyone wants to talk to us it will be whilst we are partly obscured by a piece of electronic circuitry wrapped in a cool black plastic case.

Life will never be the same. Thank goodness we don't live in the Good Old Days when houses were cold and technology meant investing in a second TV channel.

This ITV thing will never catch on. Excuse me while I get back to Muffin The Mule. So to speak.

Mike and Hazel are being replaced by iPhones? My God man!

I'm finding it hard to tell how much of your anticipation is tongue-in-cheek though...

I am sure that I will get lots of 'this doesn't work like my old phone' and 'the battery life does not last 17 days' etc.

Maybe not, as my requirements have changed. I no longer need 17 days of battery life, so we'll see!

mr_e, what, me, tongue-in-cheek?

Well I hope it works out well. If you are using Microsoft Outlook you can sync all your contacts with your computer which is very helpful.

Another tip regarding email. Make sure your email addresses are set up as IMAP. If they are using POP3 then the emails will be downloaded and stored on your phone, the IMAP syncs your destop, phone and webserver so all email boxes have the same information. If Virgin don't do this automatically then set up a googlemail account and set all email addresses to forward automatically. Or share my Mobile Me family pack which allows for up to 5 family members to use the servce. Normally it's £89 but I will share for £30! Bargin! :-D

Honestly, let me know if you need any help, I like IT related stuff really.

You will love the photography apps!

Thanks for the tip about POP3 servers. If i can't work it out I'll be in touch...

A text message has already arrived and delivery will be between 09.18 and 10.18 today. Pretty precise and I'm not sure i'd like to work for that delivery company.

Delivery was at 09.45 so that was excellent service from Orange!

The first iPhone is now updated and registered so I'm just waiting for the SIM card to be activated. Then I'll buy a new ringtone maybe and start to set up the Internet and e-mail options.

Now for some sustenance and I'll then start on Sue's iPhone so it will be ready for her later after she's back from work.

Exciting times indeed.

This is getting like a Facebook Status report, but I've now sussed out how to make a music track a ringtone.

Ain't the Internet wonderful? :-D

Both phones now up and running.

First impressions are fine - first and foremost they make clear good quality phone calls. The Internet access is an added bonus and will be very useful. It won't replace a laptop for ease of use, but it's not quite as large as a laptop either.

The idea of snynching to the PC is cute and useful enough. iTunes is well thought out. Design wise the iPhone is slick and as intuitive as a Nokia mobile had become.

Definitely a Design Icon!

One problem sorted, one outstanding. The sorted one was getting some data off Sue's old phone. This has been a nightmare, basically because three computers tried just would not do it. Despite driver updates and software downloads nothing worked. Finally, our oldest Windows xp machine would do it and the rewuired files can now be accessed with ease and have been transferred to the main PC. It took three hours to achieve that....

The problem outstanding is no doubt dead simple. Will someone please tell me how to transfer some CD music files in iTunes to the iPhone?

Once the music is on iTunes you can drap the songs from your iTunes library to your iPhone. Should sync automatically! Full review pending? With star rating obviously!

The problem actually turned out to be incredibly simple - an unticked box. Tick the box and away it goes, so the technology is now doing what I expected in the first place.

Every time a problem arises we learn a little more! :-)

Was the tick box - 'Manually manage the songs on my iPhone'? I am curious.

"Synch Music" wasn't ticked. None of the synching options are - so I'll have to tick all those I want synching.
