The Prisoner New

A remake of the 60's cult classic in 2010 with Sir Ian McKellen. It is rather big budget semi-spy, semi-phycological thriller. It has none of the charm or cleverness of the original. I think because they have too big a budget and therefore are trying too hard. Ultimately though, it has captured my interest for a little while and I will keep watching them.

The premiss is simple. A man suddenly resigns from a top secret organisation. Afterwards he wakes up in a mysterious village with no idea how he came to be there and having been renamed 6. It then becomes a bit of cat a mouse with 2 to try and prove who is right.

You can catch up on the ITV Player. We now know where ITV has spent all its money!

Is it still set in Portmeirion (Inow know why they thought they could increase the wedding package by a third, bastards).

Nope, it is set in either a specific set or a holiday village in a desert. I don't particularly like the grandeous nature of the programme but I do like the intrigue. As it progresses though you can tell that the charm and well written original is far superior.

I guess the hype of the new programme did effect the ticket prices more than a little! Doh!

I tried part of an episode, but found it really dreary. At least Portmeirion has a genuine feel to it and really catches the eye.

I overheard an American at Portmeirion one day saying, "Gee this is great, just think of what Disney could make of this."

Disney = rubbish, probably! The programme has the same good premis but I feel they are trying to be too clever (like lost for example). Will keep watching for now. I want to know why Sir Ians wife is kept in a coma.

It has been bugging me who the Doctor in the New Prisoner is (number 313). After a quick google search it appears that she was Jane in Jane Eyre - interesting that with a change in hair colour it took me 5 episodes to realise she was familiar.

SPOILERS

Dissapointing end to the programme. They tried too hard to make it mysterious with Six effectively choosing to stay in a dream world to look after the mental cases sent there. This released Number 2 and his 'dreamer wife' who was keeping the whole fantasy world alive. Effectively a cross between the Mattix and The Prisoner. Not good.

2s. Below average with confused story and poor writing / dialogue.
