The Island

Post by Mike »

We watched this film the other day. It was a great spectical but I am afraid that on the small screen it was barely watchable. The main story had been told by about 30mins into the film and after that it was just a big chase.

All in all moderately watchable.
3S

PS On another note I posted the wrong film back to Love Film and now am not going to see Lady Killers - Doh!

That is the one. The clones are kept in an underground bunker surrounded by a huge holographic projector to make them think that the world outside has been destroyed.

The governments are unknowing (or uncaring) of the fact that the clones become sentient. When a clone wins the lottery they are sent to the Island the sole remaing paradise to live a life of luxury. The clone is then harvested for their organs and killed. Then one generation of the clones starts to develop memories of their donars in the real world. (Pretty implausable since memories are not really stored in DNA) and breaks into the medical quarter by a rather weird service tunnel and sees what is going on.

He and his wannabe girlfriend then break out and are chased all the way across the USA in an attempt to find their donars and apeal for their help.

I didn't think they had memories - but that the clones were engineered to stay at a certain mental age, therefore leading them to not question what was around them.

Rather than having memories - Ewan McGregors character began to question his surroundings, explore etc. I thought that was the point ??

Although maybe there was something about memories as well !!

It was the growth in memories that led to them starting to question their environments. Else how else would he have managed to learn Latin and know how to draw a boat! :D

I hate to indulge in thread necrophilia, but I watched this the other day. I'm not one of those overly cynical viewers, as I can suspend disbelief and criticism during watching a film: I liked the premise to it, and the major shift from weird sci-fi to action-packed chase movie worked pretty well, so I'd go three and a half stars, but we lack the code for that. It has Scarlett Johansson in it (bonus), but doesn't leave me thinking too much afterwards, hence no four stars. Worth renting, I think.
