Manchester Young Practitioners in Architecture

Post by liz.brownlloyd »

Hopefully this will work and not land in a random topic!

As some of you may be aware I am on the committee of an organisation called M'YPA, which is an organisation that promotes the views of young architects. An excerpt from our last press release is detailed below and if you wish to find out more please email mypa@sparc-architects.co.uk or visit http://www.freewebs.com/manchesterypa/

Manchester?s Young Practitioners in Architecture (M?YPA) are a non-profit volunteer group of people incorporating Architects, Architectural Assistants and students under the age of 40. Our aim is to enhance the image and promote the recognition of young talent in the Manchester Arts and Architectural scenes through networking, talks, exhibitions, competitions, study trips, socialising and much more. The Young Practitioner?s in Architecture is affiliated to the Manchester Society of Architects.

In June 2006 an open competition was launched for young professionals and students to celebrate 10 years of Architecture Week. The ?ideas? competition, asks for conceptual solutions that will regenerate 5 vacant sites within Manchester. Temporary installations, structures or art works could be assembled on these sites to create more pleasant settings within the city until planned developments are realised. Revitalisation of built up areas within the city is a key factor in the successful working of the city. The sites may be treated individually or as a series of connected spaces.

M?YPA organised an award night and celebrated the end of Architecture week at Kro Piccadilly in Manchester on 23rd June where more than 100 people turned up to view the exhibition. The quality of the submissions were high and after a long discussion between the jury panel the submission were awarded as follows:

1st: Mena Kubba & Martin Jarvie, Gathering Space (Anderson Bell Christie, Glasgow).
2nd: Craig Barilsford, Martin Fox, Andrea White, Katarzyna Jurkiwicz (Sheppard Robson, Manchester)
3rd: Ashvin De Vos, Salad Island (JM Architects, Glasgow) Commendation: Chi Chung WONG (Ronald), Kin Chung KWOK (Year Two, MSA)

Ooh, a lesser-spotted Liz. I do have to ask, though: networking, talks, exhibitions, competitions, study trips, socialising and much more - what exactly does the "much more" bit involve?

You are right that does sound suspicious! I think that they had run out of ideas and decided to put that in case people though the list was not extensive enough.

I am sure it is a very exciting organisation. At the very least it gets you out of the house to meet new people! :D

Morris dancing ... now slightly scared

Post by liz.brownlloyd »

I am now slightly scared - I can assure you all that part of our other activities do not involve morris dancing. Though as I was painting walls last week part of my life does involve tripping on paint fumes.

Its actually quite fun - though I don't have as much time as I like to attend activities and become involved. The compeitition party was a mighty success with 8 entries (we were expecting about one in our wildest nightmares) and it was held at Kro Piccadily. A good mix of people attended and it seems people are really taking us seriously if the number of requests to help out with next year's compeitition has anything to go on.

Any questions I will dutifully try and answer.

isn't it something to do with photosynthesis?

More importantly Fez, to build on your question, why is it sometimes greener on the other side and sometimes not?

check this out:

so the answer as to why grass is greener is that someone has chemically treated it to be that way!
