Superman Returns

Post by Andy »

Went to see this tonight and it is a good film but not a great one.

For me, the concept / plotline is very good - it is simple but effective. It has enough to keep the film going strong for 1 1/2 hours but not for 2. IMHO, the ending is terrible mainly because it is dragged out far too long. I would have also liked to have had more laughter in this film - there are only a few funny moments. The CGI is excellent and makes it an excellent viewing spectacle and this is what will make the film sellable and a blockbuster.

Kevin Spacey is brilliant as Lex Luthor, he has some wonderful lines and produces some brilliant facial expressions in places. He is not in it enough - they need to dedicate a film to him. Now that would be a blockbuster! Brandon Routh is as good as Christopher Reeve, IMHO. He is not fluid but is not as wooden as I feared he would be. Lois Lane (the doctor from Prison Break / Jane from Tarzan) is a good actress and actually looks like a woman who Superman would think about dating - Margaret Kidder never really did it for me.

The one thing that really annoyed me was the parts of the film that seemed like dodgy parodies of other films - Titanic is an obvious one, Independence day (it reminds me of this in one bit) is another, some of it seems too much like Matrix 3 at the end - I know it is inevitable that anything now will be linked to a film in the past but other films get away with it and this one didn't. I don't know why it didn't, it might have just been me - I'm in a critical mood at this point.....

Overall, I haven't truly decided so I would have to say.... 4S because Kevin Spacey is ace, Lois Lane is actually good looking and the concept is good

However, I would also give it 3S because of the ending, they must have dragged it out for funding and the possibly obvious sequel (that I don't want to mention because I'll spoil the film) is really going to bug me for a few days.

I suspect that this film would have been better in the Cinema as Lizzie pointed out. It seems daft to create a whole film based solely for 1 months view time though. A disappointing return for superman with only

2S

No new ideas and the story was weak to say the least.
