The Island was a pretty good film. I think there is a review on the site somewhere.

Hmm...borrow? I'm guessing that he didn't have much say in the matter!

Transformers toys were the coolest of the cool. I had an Optimus Prime and a Megatron. My parents queued up for ages outside various toy shops in order to get me them for Christmas...bet my dad has eBayed them by now!

I do detect a note of bitterness there. . . . luckily I think all my Transformers are intact and gathering dust in the attic. Maybe I should consider ebaying. I can not imagine they are worth much though. After all they are old, pretty battered and not boxed. . .

The bitterness mainly comes from the fact that I know he owes me money, and he knows he owes me money. Yet whenever I ask for my money he says that he'll 'calculate the exact sum later'. Which basically means 'I'll keep hold of it till you forget', a scheme that I used to use to avoid paying him!

It's almost as good as the 'What? I've already given you that money.' scam. That one works better as they get older and more forgetful! :)

I wonder if this works with the Inland Revenue. I sort of suspect not . . . .

Well we went to see the film yesterday on the the general release preview. The film was an amazing blockbuster, it had humour, class and big robots beating the hell out of each other! What was lacked in subtly it made up for in pure enjoyment. The actual CGI is the best part about the film, it had transforming, fights going on through buildings, jets being destroyed bid air wow, the list goes on.

CGI 5S rating!

On a side note there were some interesting 'homages' to the original film. The three I spotted (I am sure there are more) were:
1 - "You have failed me again Starscream!" - Megatron
2 - "One shall stand; One shall fall" - Optimus Prime
3 - Ironhide jumped onto the Tank (name escapes me - Brawl?) and pulled the gun barrel up and to the side to protect another Autobot.

The downsides, to give a fair appraisal, were that the plot and story seemed alittle disjointed, the story did not always flow from scene to scene . There was the inevitable build up to the main fight with abit of padding going on in the early stages of the film.

Despite this it was very much enjoyed, as I am sure will be confirmed by others, and I am now tempted to watch the original movie again and get the Transformers comic prequel to see what it is like.

I agree with everything Mike said. The cgi was superb, the action set-pieces were incredible and there was a nice level of humour across the film. However it was clear that the money had been spent on effects and not necessarily on a great editor / actors.

All in all I would give it 4S

I'm hovering at about 4.5 stars: it's not a classic by any means, but it is one of the best action films I've seen in ages. I was initially worried about how angular the designs looked compared to the original films, but they worked brilliantly. Megatron was even more nasty-looking than ever before, and the scenes for the first half hour with the Decepticons doing their thing had the whole "wtf are these things!?" vibe. Good stuff.

I'm also worried we missed something by leaving before the end of the credits. They must be planning a sequel...

I've heard rumours of a trilogy...let's hope number two isn't just story filler like Pirates 2.

If it is a trilogy then I want substance and style for the other two. I concur with the sentiments above no PIRATES effect PLEASE! :D

Hmm, now out on DVD and just watched....

Not bad. Not fantastic as films go, but not bad. I thought the Autobots acted well, not as wooden as the humans....

Yes, not at all bad.
