Apple iPhone

Post by Mike »

I am not sure how they managed to use this title as I have found an article on engadget saying panasonic owns the trade mark to the name. However, the iPhone from apple looks the business. It will be on sale as of Christmas time this year for about ?250 but just check out the technical specifications.

Phone
Web browsing
Email
Touch sensitive screen
GPS
MP3 and Video playback

I am impressed. I don't think I would use the PDA functions properly but I still want one! It would be ace.

Here is the website if you want to have a look at the specification.

It is not just you that is impressed, my form are already ordering it for next Xmas from their parents!!!

Having been giving the ''lowdown'' on it by the kids-in-the-know, I do have to say they have raised the bar quite considerably.

Its the most excited I have been about a phone ever. You can imagine the eventual problems from the outset but that is a small price to pay.

I can imagine that the battery life will leave little to be desired which will be the main bug bear. However, I will consider the purchase at the end of the year. I suspect I would rather put ?250 towards a mac pro.

on R1 newsbeat this morning tho they said its main drawback is that it does not have 3G which will make browsing and downloads sluggish?
I don't know if thats true and I'm sure the clever guys at Apple have come up with a cunning get-out? 8)

The cunning get-out appears to be "Cingular?s EDGE network", can't say I've heard much about it, but I'm not really up to date with mobile phones an' all that jazz.

Edit: "...the device fails to support Cingular's HSDPA wireless broadband network, instead only working on their slower (around 200kbps) EDGE network. Yes, technically EDGE is broadband -- but only if you work at the FCC. As we just noted, HSDPA is available in 160 markets, and offers speeds up to 400-700kbps, with bursts to 1Mbps." Source

"Apple has built in a workaround of sorts because it's including Wi-Fi capability in the phone, which will give users high-speed data connectivity. But users will have to find a Wi-Fi hotspot to take advantage of the faster speeds on the iPhone." Source

There also appears to be speculation 3G would've cut the battery life too much.

Surely the main source of lost battery will be the fact that instead of being a dedicated phone, mp3 player or pda, it's a jack of all trades and therefore the power circuitry cannot be tuned for a specific purpose?

As for the name, it appears the network company Cisco acquired the rights to the name iPhone when it bought Infogear in 2000 and it looks like they may be in for a fight: Cisco sues over iPhone

I have to admit though, it does look very smart and some of the innovation on the display / input device is incredible. I bet it will cost a fortune though...

It will cost ?250 at christmas this year. I am not surprised to hear about the lawsuit. I was sure it would happen.

With the wireless connectivity you should never need 3G, wireless hotspots are getting more and more frequent and with BT you get 250mins of pure wireless connectivity each month which would have a perfect use on a iPhone. I am sure that 3G will be useful in the middle of the country though. . . .

Many of the features on the Iphone are already on the various incarnations of the SPV. If you know what your doing you can get it for free from orange.

They have Wi-fi are 3G give you full internet access and because they run windows mobile you can download and install all kinds of ported software for example PDF viewers, photoshop type applications even CAD. Music and video is catered for by windows media player (or any of the other free music players you can download). The computer geek at work can even remotely start his pc using his phone and transfer files, monitor renders etc. They too have a touch screen and the higher models have a very slick little slide out qwerty keyboard.

Admittedly they don't look as pretty as the mac variant but for a truly convergent gadget it scores pretty highly.

I know that the technology is available for this type of phone but it is the display and organisation of the interface which is the great thing about it. There is no more keyboards sliding out and making life complicated!

It is a little like comparing a Ferrari to a Mazda in terms of style etc. The Ferrari is much better thought out despite the fact they are both 2 seater sports cars. 8)

Apple and Ciasco systems are now both going to use the brand name i-phone. This BBC article explains the deal. I don't think that any financial details have been released yet.

Functionality wise the keyboard is actually a step forwards not a step backwards as you seem to think. I know a number of people with previous incarnations of the spv where everything is done via the touch screen and they are a pain in the ass to use. Also they have a tendancy for you to hang up on a call by pressing your ear on the screen. The link I showed does have touch screen for most of its inputs the slide out keyboard is a secondary thing to allow for more efficent text input.

I think a prada bag/rucksack simily is more appropriate. The prada bag looks pretty and shinny but if you want to actually carry anything your better off with a rucksack.

Anyway who the fuck wants a ferrari? you can't park em anywhere without returning to find them covered in phlegm and everybody knows when they see you driving down the street that your penis is so small it may aswell be an inny!

This phone gets better and better. Steve Jobs has announced they are working hard on 3rd party applications for this phone. Quality, I just hope one day I will be able to afford one of these. In addition they are claiming that it is the best iPod they have ever created.

John at the office is going to get one of these in a couple of months so I will be very interested to see what it is actually like!

There are probably cheaper pretty things you can buy, but none that make phone calls, play music, and access the internet like that.

Personally, I'd wait until some user reviews came out so we knew how well the touch-screen worked. Apple does seem to have a decent record with interfaces, but if it starts failing after a couple of months of use, that's no good.
