Windows Vista Launches

Microsoft have launched their new software Vista this week for Home users. Do we think that Vista will rule the world? I think it will out of habit rather than intelligence.

Vote people vote, which is your favourite?

PS One of the above is a real, real fake. I bet you can not spot it. . . .

I intend not to upgrade my OS for a very long time, purely in protest at the stupid amount of "Digital Rights Management" (is that correct?) in Vista. That alone is going to force hardware prices up due to the effort manufacturers need to make to comply with it. That's if you trust the articles I read.

Vista will arrive by default at some future point when we upgrade a computer. But not until then.

I'm not one for these computer geeky guessing games where the answer ends up being the fact that you deliberately missed out a hyphen or the X should have been x. Tell me damn it!

It might have been that Window's 95 was a bit of a dead herring. :D

I'm getting a new laptop soon (when we have stock...), it comes with XP but I'll be able to get a free Vista upgrade package with it. From the amount of trouble people in my office have had with it, the Vista disc will be staying firmly sealed up until at least the first Service Pack is available to fix some 'quirks'.

Unless you have a new pc or a serious amount of hardware already, Vista will run like a dog and will be incompatible with some software out there.

all our stuff at work and home changed to XP toward the end of last year and i can't see vista make any improvements on what i'm already using. so it might be flasher, but surely this is just microsoft changing its 'windows dressing' [do you get it?] and slapping a bigger price tag on it for a few extra baubles

The six or so different flavours of Vista are sure to cause some confusion as well. I suspect they've been necessitated by the huge harware requirements for the full version: if I was being entirely cynical, I'd say hardware manufacturers have given Microsoft some backhanders so they can flog higher-powered computers. Being more reasonable, it's likely just part of the innate desire to constantly push boundaries.

Unfortunately the 6 versions are due to anti-competitive law rulings. Microsoft ideal is to have Vista Home and Vista Pro Business. I actually feel sorry for Microsoft in these anti competitive rulings - I think that European Parliament was showing its colours very effectively during those rulings. They knew a huge fine was nothing to Microsoft as they would earn billions during the release Vista and XP and took full advantage.

It is the sign of things to come - UMP will push for everything they think they can get until people revolt! :D

According to one report Vista is the most useless upgrade ever. Microsoft must be very disappointed in this assessment. The really low budget version is supposed to be so ugly it defies belief. Not only that but they seem to be taking mac style of windows onto the computer - what is with the copying? Get your own ideas.

And I still can't run my mp3 player software.

Looks like an email to Sony technical support, where I'll probably be told that they don't support Vista yet. Which is the lamest excuse ever, as they've had six years...grr!

The shinyshiny.tv gals have reviewed Vista and are concerned about the high level of bugs within the program. Not really a good sign it must be said!

It's not the most professional or informative review I've seen. Their main problem appears to be with the interface and Internet Explorer, but it isn't encouraging. I'll be letting it settle down for a year or so before I even consider any new nardware with Vista on it.

I don't think I will bother with Vista at all. I am also amazed that iTunes have come out and said - don't bother installing our program yet, we need to resolve some serious problems with how we interface with windows before it will even be considered. . . .

To be totally fair Apple released their intel chip computers about 6 months earlier than expected and threw some major apple software companies of kilter - that said the software worked but less efficiently than normal. Most poeple would not have noticed the difference thanks to apple rossetta software which emulates previous versions of the OS I think automatically!

PS I think the Shiny Shiny gals are very good and funny too. The Vista one was a little bit unco-ordinated it must be said but. . .
