Will Alsop does suck, purely for that piece of shit web-site. But some of his staff are well fit. Did he do the super-city thing? That was quite a cool idea. Hooray for high-speed train links.

Indeed. as does the supercity he just propsing calling it one.....lets be honest if you drive along the M62 you have exactly what he is proposing dense urban centres along a transport spinewith some green spaces between them. Except we call them Liverpool,Warrington, Manchester, Bradford, Halifax, Huddersfield and Leeds..

Thinking about it, that really reminds me of those Richard Rogers proposals in Cities For A Small Planet, but slightly more crap. You know, the linear ones, where everyone is within fifteen minutes walk of the main transport spine?

It would appear that Will Alsop does indeed suck.

Or indeed he is very clever as he has worked out a fascinating way to get paid for thinking up new ways of presenting old ideas. Maybe we should call supercity a 'Re-branding' exersise.

That is rather random isnt it. I would first suggest checking out his website. Click Here. This website is sort of difficult to navigate but it is a start. Other than that try his books, inspirationally called;
Will Alsop Book 1, 1968-1990. Kenneth Powell, ISBN 1856692388, ?28.99 new, ?12 used on amazon.
Will Alsop Book 2, 1990-2000. Kenneth Powell, Mel Gooding, ISBN 1856692795. ?42 new at amazon.
Or you could try the SuperCity exhibition in Urbis (if you are in manchester)
Or the New Islington plan for Great Ancoats area.

I am sure if anyone else has any suggestions they will post them here. Out of curiosity why are you researching Will Alsop? Are you a student architect?

off top of my head (which is quite an empty an windy space i admit)

schemes will alsop has been involved in are:

Modern Art Gallery, Toronto (big coloured glass building on stilits)
Peckham Library (big coloured glass building on stilts that won the stirling prize; the interior has some wicked looking timber pod/rooms of weird shaped but i believe they are coming apart at the seams now)
New Islington masterplan (for the ancoats area of Manchester; lots of coloured glass buildings on stilts around a new extension to the existing canal. a better proposal would have been touse the canal to droen the preponderance of scallies from there THEN build)

I also believe he did the master plan for Barnsley, which is based on the idea of a Tuscan hill town, where he wanted to flood the centre of the city and then design around it.....

also, his supercities theory which would have linked the country as a giant Z of cities literally (glasgow to edinburgh down to newcastle across torks thru manc/liverpool down birmingham etc...u get the idea??

also and worth to note:

am not a big fan of will alsop
