new year revolutions...
new year revolutions...
...because i can't spell resolution. i'm going start doing stuff i want to do rather than deny myself things i used to do. so, i'm going to swear more, drink more, take the credit for all my own farts and generally stop giving a fuck about what other people think of me
I came, I saw, I bought the T-shirt
"Revolution" sounds so much more dramatic and life-changing. I have a fairly chunky list of stuff I'd like to change, but I'll probably blurt out a load of drunken stuff on New Year's Eve anyway, so I'll save it for then. I'll be most impressed if you start drinking and swearing at work, Fez, that'll give them something to talk about in the playground, and whilst the parents are lynching you.

Re: new year revolutions...
you mean you've actually cared about this previously?Fez wrote: generally stop giving a fuck about what other people think of me
My goodness, you cared about what people thought about you and dressed like you did?
Tempted as I am to try to take this down the philosophy route, all I shall say is that the world would be a better, thicker-skinned place if everyone said exactly what they thought about each other, which would also go beautifully hand in hand with Fez's not caring about people's opinions. This could be the birth of a whole new worldview, like a mouthier version of stoicism. I really must avoid drinking too much on New Year's Eve, it could get "interesting".

If we all said what we thought then I don't think the world would be a better place. What sort of example would we be giving to the youngsters, where the majority are already bereft of one positive role model in the home. The amount of stuff the average teenager now sees, or is aware of, has managed to steel their emotions much earlier than previous generations. Now we're inadvertently encouraging them not to care about each other's feelings and completely disrespect society? That is ludicrous.
Surely we should be advocating respect because we continually appear to state, on this forum, what is wrong with the world/what should be changed (as well as the other mindless stuff) and now we're saying that it is fine not to care about what other people think of us? Is it OK for any group of society to slag off the police/parents/random groups of people/any authorative figure? No! But wait a moment, that group doesn't care what they think! So why does our society need respect? Lets abolish it!
Our feelings change and let's face it we've all felt like saying ''you're a w****r'' to someone and then a few weeks later they are OK and you think they're alright. That person might have been going through complete crap in their personal lives for all we know and was just taking it out on us because they knew they could and because they knew we cared.
If we do not care what anyone thinks then we are going on a road that is not productive. I agree with you that there are situations when there are some people that you should not care what they think about you - i.e. the ones who have done you very badly wrong in the past. However, I do think that you should care about what the people that matter to you think about you because they are the ones that probably genuinely care about your well being. If you want to go down the road of not caring what people think about you, go down that road, just don't expect me to go with you.

I really shouldn't make slightly tongue-in-cheek posts in threads like this, like my last one. The posting time raises an eyebrow, I must admit.

?If we all said what we thought then I don't think the world would be a better place.?
If we said what we really thought there would be no room for lies most importantly or misunderstanding people?s intentions. True, if this was suddenly thrust upon people it would uncover the tangled web of bullshit we tell even our own loved ones, but then again in future maybe we would refrain from saying such things in the first place.
?What sort of example would we be giving to the youngsters??
It would teach the ?youngsters? [a wonderful phrase mainly used by the over fifties] that the truth is more important than lying to people?s faces which surely most be an object lesson to teach them from a young an age as possible.
?Now we're inadvertently encouraging them not to care about each other's feelings and completely disrespect society??
I didn?t say that. But then again wouldn?t we be teaching them to respect each other?s feeling implicitly by showing them the best thing is to be open and honest? True, maybe what they have to say is not nice to hear, but it removes grey areas of trust allowing a frank discussion of problems which could never be resolved if they were left in the dark.
?Surely we should be advocating respect because we continually appear to state, on this forum, what is wrong with the world/what should be changed and now we're saying that it is fine not to care about what other people think of us??
This I think is the fundamental flaw and I believe the crux of a big misunderstanding. When I said I was going ? or continuing ? to stop caring about what other people think of me I made the mistake of not emphasizing who I had in mind. I meant the day to day dicks that give you shit at the traffic lights for not flooring the accelerator as soon as the amber glow showed, the twats who shout abuse at you from the other side of the street for just being?well, not like them, and the assholes we have to suffer with in this country who just come into your life to make you feel miserable.
Now, taking a closer look at the above quote I think being more open and honest would improve the levels of respect we have for each other not just as a society but as individuals, but there?s a further point. It is fine not to care what other people think of us because some people are bastards whose sole purpose is to be mean on every possible occasion ? but also there should be much much more emphasis on what we think of ourselves and not be slaves to what other people think we should be.
I know and love a good many people, well some, and I know some of them feel the same way about me [the fools], but what I think of myself is more important than what they think of me. This for me isn?t an issue of respect in a social / political context, it is a shift in perspective designed basically to improve my own level of self-esteem. For me to feel better about myself I have to stop listening to the nay-sayers ? those are the people who?s opinion?s I don?t care about, and those are the people I had in mind when I said I was going to stop caring what people think of me.
?So why does our society need respect? Lets abolish it!?
No, let?s not, that?s a stupid idea. I know that?s quoting out of context but I just wanted to point out my own opinion toward a theoretical statement.
?Our feelings change and let's face it we've all felt like saying ''you're a w****r'' to someone and then a few weeks later they are OK and you think they're alright.?
No, that?s not ?not caring about what someone else thinks of us? that?s just unprovoked abuse. Where does not caring about other people think of us morph into random hostility toward innocent bystanders? Besides the fact I have never said you?re a wanker to someone and then changed my mind ? once a wanker always a wanker.
?If we do not care what anyone thinks then we are going on a road that is not productive. I agree with you that there are situations when there are some people that you should not care what they think about you - i.e. the ones who have done you very badly wrong in the past.?
This is as I have said, at least now anyway, a point I totally agree with and these were the fucks I had in mind to stop caring about.
?However, I do think that you should care about what the people that matter to you think about you because they are the ones that probably genuinely care about your well being.?
These are the people, my nearest and dearest, who I have the smallest regard for what they think of me because if they meant it they would say it. To return to a previous theme, honesty and truth are what should bind us together and if a friend can?t say what he/she thinks of you to your face why the fuck should I care what they think? The truth might hurt, but not as much as believing someone is your friend only for years and years down the line to find out it was all bullshit. The jury will judge on actions not on thoughts. And that is why I will stop caring about what people ?think?.
?If you want to go down the road of not caring what people think about you, go down that road, just don't expect me to go with you.?
I?ll send you a postcard

Having read what you have put I think there is a need now to clarify that, at least in my honest opinion, there is a massive diving gap between ''not caring what people think'' and '' being more open and honest would improve the levels of respect we have for each other not just as a society but as individuals.''
Now that I know what you are going on about I agree with you. I have lead, certainly my social life, along the lines of accept me as you find me for a long time and I believe it has stood me in good stead. In my working circle, I tried to do the same, was shit on, shit on again and lost out on promotion, I don't do that way now because people in my department are psychotic. However, the vast majority (in the rest of the school) haven't done me wrong and I am civil to them but will always be wary of them. When you've been done out of ?2K you have to be. I honestly don't think that you will ever get a situation where a large number of adults are honest with each other, especially after what has just happened to us - complete overhaul of the pay structure, management structure, people lost jobs, people gained jobs unfairly, etc. Morally what has happened is wrong in my school and I don't agree with it even though I have benefitted from it (a new job was created).
I do feel that being ''more open and honest'' with each other would make for a better world. ''Not caring what others think'' could have disastrous consequences in my opinion, as I have already stated. In fairness, my point was all 'doom-descending madness' but that is what I think it could actually turn out to be. Your point of ''It is fine not to care what other people think of us because some people are bastards whose sole purpose is to be mean on every possible occasion'' I actually agree with to this to some degree, if someone is nasty to you for no apparent reason then by all means don't care. But don't decide not to care about them for your own ends, especially if you have befriended that person.
''but also there should be much much more emphasis on what we think of ourselves and not be slaves to what other people think we should be.''
I actually thought that was how you lived your life anyway. In fact, that is how I thought we all lived our lives. That is why I like you guys.

care is a loaded word here and suggests the simple alternative is to start treating people like shit, which is not what i suggested or an idea i would condone. in this context 'not caring what people think' has been warped into 'your friends are worthless' which again was not what i had in mind. there was certainly a lack of clarity in the original statement which i have since tried to expand upon, but i would still hold to the comment 'some people are bastards' who need to be ignored - yet further still i also believe my own opinion and views should not be subject to whether or not i think friends will agree with me. i don't want to 'care' so much about other people's thoughts that i abandon my own judgement.Andy wrote:But don't decide not to care about them for your own ends especially if you have befriended that person
