memories of 2006

looking back on this year i have to say its been a bad one from the start and nothing that could happen in the days that remain can over turn that fact. even the early hours of it marked a new personal low point that it took a long time to crawl up from and is not an experience i ever want to be put through again. but for the first time i was made to share wider family strife as the weeks rolled on, which it was impossible not to bogged down in.
my gran hasn't been the same since two drugged up intruders walked into her house about twelve months ago, her confidence took a knock and in th fall out her health has greatly suffered. she has all but stopped eating and has been bed ridden for the last six months being cared for by a combination of visiting nurses and family members. she did seem more talkative and lucid when i saw her last week but a full recovery is out of the question. i can't begin to guess what the near future holds for her.
this was follwed by my grandad from the other side of the family going into hospital for an operation on his ankle. the bug he caught when he was in there left him mentally confused and physically weakened for a number of months, but thankfully he is now back to his old self again and he remains the most active eighty-three year old i know.
shortly after this my dad injured his leg during a team building exercise at work and my mother and me spent almost eight hours at bolton royal following him as he was ferried from doctor to nurse and back again. the operation was done the day after and he was out within two weeks, though he still walks with a slight limp all these months after and the six inch scar will be a permanent reminder.
breaking cars have been a constant feature for me and my brothers recently. while i have developed a strange desire to hit stationary objects at low speed, richard wrote off his car last week after swerving to avoid a subura on the wrong side of the road - it didn't stop and richard now has most of the windscreen glass embedded in his arm. this week james was involved in another accident that wasn't his fault but seems likely to keep his car off the road for some considerable time - this too may even be a write off but if i come across the taxi driver responsible the bastard's face will be as well.
personally, aside from the new year meat grinder, i've been faced with redundancy only to be given a last minute reprieve that has married me to a job i started to hate within the first few weeks of starting it, and the grim satisfaction to be on hand to offer whatever ineffectual help to everyone else as the health and money troubles continue to grow. it has been without doubt the worst year in living memory and i for one will be glad to see the back of it.
what will everyone else take from the last twelve months?
