Earthquake 10 August 2007

Well it is true - Manchester suffered one of twenty five noticeable earthquakes on 10 August 2007. I personally did not feel it but others in the office noticed. Did anyone else feel it?

It didn't get as far as Bolton... :(

I got woken up by this earthquake in 2002 though.

It says it happened at 10.50am.

Nothing much to report from Cumbria in terms of seismic activity. Typical though: I go to the pretty scenery then miss all the natural earthquake drama. Looks like the only danger from it was possibly falling roof slates, thankfully...

I hope you had a good time though. I bet it was a bit of a shock to get back to polluted old Manchester and Stockport!

i remember the earthquake that Al's referring to. there had been ante-shock during the night that could be felt in manchester, and i seem to remember the worst being in the morning, i was in a seminar on Language and Cultural theory in a dismal window-less room, in the basement of the Maths tower, and we basically just evacuated the place - it was a weird experience. more recently, i was at the Science Museum in London - or was it the Natural History Museum? they're next door so who knows?! - and they have like this motion platform that similuated the below 5 shocks of the Kobe earthquake. the main shocks were way above that. they showed CCTV footage from offices and shops during the quake; it was horrendous.

The house in Cannock has a train line right behind it, which carries coal to a power station and my first assumption on being rudely awoken by the earthquake was that a train had derailed somewhere close to us. After a quick inspection out of the back windows we all decided that we didn't have a clue and went back to bed. It wasn't until the morning that we worked out what it must have been. A very strange experience!

The weird thing is that I've been to California three times now, including stays in San Francisco and the LA region, and that was the first quake I'd ever felt. They're supposedly a daily occurrence over there...I think they're getting confused between big fat Americans falling over and earthquakes! :)
