4gb Ram baby yeah!

Post by Mike »

Lizzie has kindly bought me 4gb of ram for my new iMac which is great! It is out for delivery today and I will be very happy to get that one. . . I am hoping to see a real boost in the performance of iTunes etc (which is not too shabby at the moment!).

That with the external hard disk and my plans will be complete for world domination. . . . ahem - sorry, wrong post.

I'm curious as to how easy it is to fit extra bits on an iMac. Let us know how it goes, and be sure to provide photos!

Well I could provide some sample photos but to be honest there are more than sufficient websites to show us what you need to do. Here is the apple version of the replacement set up. I have updated the ram in about 3mins (that included the time to unplug it and try and protect my uber nice screen). Am now up to the 4gb and programmes really leap to attention now!

I have dedicated a new avatar in honour of the mac based goodness. :-D

In fact I may actually take the RAM into work and update my work computer with my old stick of ram. . .

I installed a 1gb stick of ram at work taking the computer to 1.5gb and it is now got a new lease of life. The computer was really starting to struggle with Leopard at work. . . . oh well much improved. I will look forward to them ordering the 2gb sticks here too. :-D

I'm not surprised you've seen such a performance increase! That's a lot of RAM. I'm curious as to how much you'd need to run the OS entirely from memory, but I'm feeling lazy (in investigation terms) today.

I'm amazed, considering what you do, that the computers were expected to work efficiently on 512MB of RAM.

They have 1gb of RAM in them at work. They are 2 x 512mb sticks. The computer now has 1gb stick and an original 512mb.

They generally run okay but to give them some further life we are upgrading the ram in all machines to 2gb to make it easier. That is the maximum for all the computers here.
