Re: In the News
In a recession this could be key, just think of all those skilled persons out there who would help repair government buildings, roads and streets! They would need supervising but you could gain some quality skills. I wonder if they could claim to be employed if they are working for benefits. . . would they get taxed on their 'income'?
I agree, about time.

Didn't the US do something similar in the depression?- they embarked on massive road building projects and used it to get unemployed folks back in work (and paying taxes to pay for more roads!), it worked quite well as well as improving the countrys infrastructure for years to come.

This has got to be a much better way forward than building yet more runways. I have used high speed trains all over Europe and they are the doggies dangly bits. It is much much more pleasant to get up and wander down to the bar and have a drink before walking on to the dinner carrage. I even enjoyed the night train from Paris to Switzerland. What we need is a proper dedicated high speed rail network like France. Not one where all the trains use the same old shagged out rails.

You're right, President Hoover instigated a period of public work projects such as dams and roads.stimpsonslostson wrote:Didn't the US do something similar in the depression?- they embarked on massive road building projects and used it to get unemployed folks back in work (and paying taxes to pay for more roads!), it worked quite well as well as improving the countrys infrastructure for years to come.

Seems to make total sense to me for Britain...why let people sit around malingering and costing the country money when they are perfectly capable of working, but just too used to getting hand-outs?

Re: In the News
a fable from the recent past: the communist government of poland ensured every man and woman of mature age were put into some form of work during the 1980s to claim there was no such thing as unemployment in the country. while this was technically true, it crippled the country's economy and lowered standards of living for everyone. i know there are differences; poland was effectively a dictatorship and we kid ourselves we aren't, but i dont think you have fully thought through the implications of putting every briton to work - the result might not be positive.

Re: In the News
Well to take a balenced view, if government got for 'free' something they would normally pay an independant company to achieve then the independent company would suffer. In addition, if someone is honestly too I'll to work then they should receive help to survive. However, we have an unfortunate tendancy to thinking that state handouts are free. They are costing everyone money and sometimes needlessly, it would be good to get a balence where people could survive on benifits but not afford luxuries like smoking, drinking, games consoles and LCD tvs.

Re: In the News
M.E.N have reported finding a long lost castle in Lancashire! It was recorded as being ruined in 1300's!
M.E.N reported that a £30billion rail link has been unveiled connecting Manchester and Liverpool with Heathrow and then the continent. It will be a major investment in rail services which are seen as key to reduce the reliance on the ever expanding runways at Manchester and Heathrow.

Movie for £7 gets You Tube 1 million hits and lots of accolades! The two involved are going to go to Manchester Metropolitan University to study film next year. Their other film was shown at Cannes.
