The Matrix

Post by Mike »

The first in the trilogy only as it would have been much better if they had stopped after this one.

The hacker Leo is gradually made aware the the digital world is more accurate than he would ever have imagined. He is determinded to chase down the hacker named Morpheus and find out the truth.

I would rate the film - Excellent
5S

One of my all-time favourite films. I loved this one so much that I watched it 3 times at the cinema. Everything about it for me is fabulous - especially the concept and Carrie-Ann Moss in tight leather trousers! It is one of those films that I think will stand the test of time and go on to become and absolute cult classic. Shame about the other two which are good films but are average compared to the original. So much hype, so much disappointment.

Whilst at Uni, me and my friend Jimbo, an absolute film freak, watched this for about two weeks running so we could learn some of the cool quotes - ''the red pill, blue pill'' one was one of my particular favourites.

I would give this 5S, even more if I could

Does anyone know why Switch was dressed in White in the Matrix and everybody else was in black. I've read numerous theories but none seem very conclusive.

5S

But only if we can forget that there were two more films. This one in isolation is both excellent and enough IMHO.

Without the other two films the plot would make little sense. It would be like stopping the Lotr films after The Fellowship of The Ring.

I just feel that the first film tells me everything I need to know and my imagination can fill in the rest. The other two films do add more info of course, but is it anything that enhances the experience? In the end, all those Smiths even get rather silly....

Well, the third film was so engaging that I can't even remember the conclusion properly. First film on its own is excellent, the rest did go slightly downhill, even though some of the SFX were amazing (trailer crash scene...whoa!).

I agree with John. For me, a lot of the questions had been answered. The fact that it left it open-ended and up to our own imaginations and interpretations is a big part of my love for this film. It had also fully developed a lot of the characters and that hindered the other films. You also had to watch the Animatrix to understand them all fully which was annoying - waste of money in my opinion. Plus, the final ending was crap compared to the ending of the first one - what an almighty build up for an amazing let down!

In all honesty, if they had pooled the two films together then it would have been a good one but they went for the money. Shame really. I'd have probably done the same but they shouldn't have!

the original should have been the only - the first film told me everything and leaving it open ended would have added to the film's appeal in future, a bit like the mad max films in that respect where the hero is always drifting onward no matter what he achieves

Who's watched all the animatrix shorts? Were they any good standalone, do they flesh out any of the backstory etc? I've seen one or two and they look pretty cool...

I have the animatrix set of films I think there are about 6 off the top of my head. I really liked the first one but after that they were not as stong in the animation department. Very styalised and fun to watch though, if you are going to rate them I would give a
5S
rating.

I would only give them 3S

Mainly because I didn't think they were that good and because I thought it was a damn cheek of them to release it on DVD and them inform the cinema-going public that they had to watch it in order to fully understand it.
