Novelist Paul Sheldon (James Caan) crashes his car on a snowy Colorado road. He is found by Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates), the "number one fan" of Paul's heroine Misery Chastaine. At first he is glad of being rescued but that all stops when he realises that Annie is somewhat unstable. All alone, in a small town in Oregon, Paul finds himself crippled, drugged and at her mercy.
I have to say that this was a particularly disturbing film for me. What did I like about it - superb camera-work? very good acting? slow and intense build-up? Not sure, perhaps a combination of all of these. Whatever it was that grabbed my attention enough for me to think it merited a place here, something else grabbed my attention more - the ''hobbling'' incident.... it genuinely sickened me
A good film, not an out-and-out classic but I would definitely watch it again.
You should read the book. The descriptive version of hobbling is far worse than watching it. I seem to remember there being a "thumbectomy" in the book as well.
I think I have heard of this film before. I don't know if I have seen it but you never know! I think I am not too keen on checking this one out though. Torture is not really my cup of tea makes me feel rather ill!
true.... there must be something about the name Bates and stopping somewhere. I think I would drive off/crawl off if I saw that the owners name was Bates.
