Went to see this last night- definitely not for the faint hearted that's all I can say! To be fair though the gory bits are only in the last half hour or so, the story line is developed quite well up to then (aside from the gratuitous sex that is!). Not really your usual Tarantino fayre which was a pleasant surprise- probably the best way to describe it is 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' meets 'the Game' meets 'American Pie'...maybe!
It's made me see the YHA in a whole new light anyway!

Cool. How would you rate it? Worth seeing or not?

You mean when they got Grandad dressed for the evening meal, they give him a strange birthday present that was an Apple pie that started to consume his life?ProgRob wrote:probably the best way to describe it is 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' meets 'the Game' meets 'American Pie'...maybe!
Could be worth watching!

I wasn't actually planning to make an effort to go and see this film. I was going to go and see it if there was nothing better to do on a Saturday night. However, because of the above comment I feel that I must make the effort!
yep i have seen this film too, my Mum came to see it with me ha ha! poor thing had no idea what it was going to be like!
i enjoyed the blood and gore but that is basically what the film is. The film i thought wasn't even a tad creepy unlike the texas chain saw massacre. What i did enjoy about the film was that in most horror film scenes have a cut away at immenent moments of gore, but this film mostly doesn't so you get to see the whole ordeal. There was one point though where even i covered my eyes which i don't believe has ever happend before!

...come get some!
Ooh, the merits of "super-gore" vs "psychological" vs "comedy horror" (ala the Evil Dead films). I think I'd have to go with the Ring, as the Japanese horror films seem to have the psychological edge. Still not sure about the Ring adaptations, though...

The adaptations are entertaining and I think on their own merit they are ok films. Problem is that they don't really stand up to the original Japanese version which was actually scarier.
Saying that the Ring 2 was a bit pants but it helped pass away a couple of hours !!
My favourite 'psychological' horror though has to be 'the Shining'- Jack Nicholson acted a bit too well as a psycho if you ask me. I was sixteen/ seventeen when I saw it - and didn't sleep for about 2 nights after. But I also like the Blair Witch Project, scary and really original.

the original japanese version of the ring is possibly the scariest thing i've ever seen without featuring on my credit card bills. it was three in the morning when i saw it and the ending had me on the verge of deciding to sleep with the lights on and boarding up the television screen so nothing could crawl out of it. i'm more of a blood and gore horror fan because it's easier to disbelief than psychological fears, and for some bizarre reason a chainsaw through the head always makes me laugh. don't know why, probably best not to ask. weird horror interests me as well, the bits of 'the cell' with the awful jennifer lopez i saw the other night looked interesting, but 'erazerhead' is still the benchmark by a country mile.
must see horror films:
01. evil dead 2 (the possessed hand trying to kill ash was great)
02. peter jackson's brain dead (zombies as far as the eye can see)
03. dawn of the dead (original - the remake was terrible)
04. shawn of the dead (hysterical)
05. hellraiser (disturbing)
06. the ring (ahhhhh!)
07. erazerhead (don't watch when stoned, it's weird enough as it is)
08. the wicker man (british horror at its best)

I came, I saw, I bought the T-shirt
I agree with Fez. The original Japanese Ring is as close to scary as I think you could get. The adaptions, in comparison, are poor.mr_e wrote:Still not sure about the Ring adaptations, though...
If you consider violence to be scary, then History of Violence is a good movie - there are some good scenes of serious gut-wrenching violence in there.
Hullo chaps,
We can prevent having to type 'the original japanese blahdy blah' by calling it Ringu, but then people might think you just can't type Ring. It took me two attempts to watch, as I had to give up the first time when she was diggin in the well in the dark, waste high in water! Gaah! The second time I made it through to the end. The Wicker Man is the second scariest film I've ever seen - it freaks me out. The Eye is another good scary Asian cinema film. Anyone seen any others, like the original of The Grudge?
Any fans of Bruce Campbell and the Evil Dead films, I highly recommend buying If Chins Could Kill, Brucey's book, as it is very funny and you get a really good idea of how they made the Evil Dead films with nearly no money and very little experience.
