This is the original film (obviously) and a Hitchcock classic, it tells the tale of a young woman who steals ?40k from her boss and flees to be with her fancy man. The tale takes a random twist when she gets lost on an old highway and stops the night at a motel. . . . . and is never seen again.
I liked this film, especially the older sytle of filming (saw the hollywood light accross the eyes etc) and also was surprised at the gerky nature of the panning and zooming - obviously the equipment was very much affected by the wind etc.
All in all a very good film with a rather funny explaination at the end for the whole series of events. It was not meant to be funny but the grave gravelly voice of the pyscologist really tickled me.
the birds is a worth a chuckle as well because the lead woman is so bad at acting you wonder how on earth hitchcock allowed it to be released without recasting. that said, the scene in the attic is pretty disturbing as is the one at the children's playground when crows descend en-mass to ruin playtime.
north by north-west is a blinder too, though any of the hitchcock films with either cary grant or jimmy stewart are worth seeing.
avoid the remake of physcho done a few years ago - it stank like the dead woman in the celler
