The Feeling

Post by Lizzie »

I know it's not everyone's cup of tea- but I bought The Feelings new album last week (called '12 Stops and Home') and am very much enjoying it.

I have bought a number of albums recently where I've enjoyed the songs that have been released and not much else and to be honest I was a bit concerned that I would have the same problem with this album. I am glad to say though that I've enjoyed the album loads so far.

Has anyone else had this problem with albums recently???

Can't say I've bought many albums recently, but I do try to avoid albums with filler tracks on. Usually going off recommendations and finding a reviewer you trust works, and I tend to shy away from impulse buying. I've spent at least several hours online planning my next set of album purchases.

It still winds me up that I can't return albums to stores after opening them, even if they're hideously crap. I suspect this is part of the reason for piracy, there being very few other ways to "try before you buy" as it were. 'Tis a sad state of affairs when bands can't be arsed to put ten good tracks on an album.

Perhaps they think they are good?

It's nice to discover a really superb album, old or new, and the last one that I discovered is the little known "Owl" by Nathalie Archangel on MCA (1992). Full of life, a vigorous and accomplished set of 11 fine songs.

Unfortunately the follow-up "Raven" that Mike downloaded for me is only OK and doesn't have the same fire and passion in it.

i generally buy about four cds per month; one will be a cracker, two & three will be good but with a few duff songs, and the forth will have maybe three decent tracks on it at the most. every three months it seems i end up with something so monumentally shit i wonder why it was ever made, but that is the danger of impulse buying even when you try to stay in a relatively tight genre [in this case punk rock].

i think it's very rare for a whole album to be top-notch, especially with the pressure for bands/artists to put out new work on an increasingly regular basis, which is why the 'skip' button was invented thus saving us from pointless guitar-twiddliness and self-indulgant ego-stroking tripe. case in point; jet. how shit can one band be? as shit as jet it turns out, fuck off back to australia and stay there.

I think it's probably more to do with fulfilling contractual obligations to record companies, whilst realising you only have enough material for five or so decent songs. It has been known (correct me if I'm wrong) for artists to release cover/b-side/remix albums because they need to get free from their current record company.

Interesting fact: apparently "one year" in a record contract is actually defined as "one album". Doesn't really encourage great songwriting if you need to escape a contract sharpish...

Anyone else heard of Nightmares on Wax? Their album 'Carboot Soul' is mucho good. I've found recently the more 'commercial' artists have the albums with filler tracks on. i bought Mary J Blige and really the only decent tracks are the ones that got released. But less commercial like KT Tunstall...i like the whole album. Zutons and the Kooks also good.

The last albums that I brought that I really enjoyed all the tracks of are:

Muse: Black Holes & Revelations
The Guillemots: Through the Window Pane
Liam Frost and the Slowdown Family: Show Me How The Spectres Dance

None of which can really be described as commercial.

Yes I've heard of Nightmares on Wax, though I don't think I've heard any of their stuff. Electronic/hip-hop type stuff if I'm correct?

I've discovered a site called http://www.gomusic.ru which I've been downloading loads of stuff from. The price of albums averages at about 60p!! It's perfectly legal as well, but because it's based in Russia it's cheap. It's worth checking out anyway- they've got a really extensive catalogue.

I've taken a leaf out of mr_e's book and included a link to my Last.fm profile to as my signature. You can now check out what I'm listening to and therefore know what to avoid buying!
