Father Christmas

Post by John Knight »

His history is long and kinda interesting but why do we do it to our kid's? We lie to our children. Its kinda odd. My daughter is 3 and totaly into the whole christmas thing this year and I'll admit we are doing the whole father christmas thing.

Of course he's real! How could you ever doubt it? I know because I saw his sleigh flying through the sky when I was very little. It moved quite fast and had a flashing light on it so none of those big jet planes would bump into it and spill the presents.

I think the red light was Rudolph's nose, but it might have been Santa's because he does drink quite a lot of sherry during the delivery round.

You might think doing all that he does in one night is impossible, but you see he travels in time as well as space so it's not a problem. We are more sophisticated these days, and understand these things....

Well I can't think of any other explanation! 8)

Row's Dad ''Of course Father Christmas is real! What do you mean, he can't get round the world in the space of a night? That's a stupid comment''

Row's 8 year-old step-sister Sarah: ''No it isn't, explain it!''

Row's Dad : ''The answer my idea is very simple, time zones!''

Well, it made me giggle and we all congratulated him on it.

I know it is lying to your child but for goodness sake, it is a nice lie and even the most pessimistic of course believed it and loved the magic of christmas when we were little.

We are missing an obvious one here. We are not telling lies because the name Santa or Father Christmas does not apply to a actual living person but to an idea or intention which is prevalent at Christmas time. It is a little difficult to explain that to a child as their world seems to revolve around food, drink and play (lucky little persons that they are!) and they have not discovered the intricacies of theological debate yet. :D

so what did santa bring you - apart from mike of course who has been a bad boy and shouldn't have got anything. among other things, because as ever i have been thoroughly good all year and therefore deserve more than the rest of you, i got three dvds of stand up gigs.

dylan moran's latest wasn't as good as his show 'monster' which came out last year-ish, dana o'brien was very good, and i was crying for mercy by the end of bill hick's 'sane man' - i said it in the book review i did of 'love all the people' in the hit list, this man was a genius and sorely missed by a world who desperately needs an acidic wit like his.
I came, I saw, I bought the T-shirt

I was very lucky this year, I received a virtual Wii, nice dressing gown, some books (a few to many to list correctly but the Michael Palin Diaries was one!), a wine cooler, who wants to be a millionaire dvd game, pictionary (class game!), desperate house wives game and a car mini vac which I will try out today!

All in all a very generous santa! (or santas!)

Santa Claus is incontrovertibly real. Only a cynic would start such a post.

(But seriously, dooesn't anyone else find it remarkable how the pretence is so universally upheld? it's got to be the best kept secret on earth because noone contravenes it and it's heinous to reveal to truth to any chiddlers.)
The crazy gets claustrophobic!
